The weather in Rwanda
Rwanda, located slightly below the Equator with much of its terrain situated at higher altitudes, experiences a pleasant tropical highland climate. Temperature variations can be observed between different regions but remain relatively consistent throughout the year.

Rainy seasons
Rwanda can still be a rewarding destination to visit during the rainy seasons, but there are some factors to consider:
- Gorilla Trekking: The rainy seasons (mid-February to May and mid-September to mid-December) can be a good time for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. The rain makes the forest lush and green, and gorillas may be easier to locate since they tend to stay lower in the mountains during this time. However, trekking in the rain can be muddy and challenging.
- Scenic Beauty: The rainy season also brings out the beauty of Rwanda’s landscapes, with vibrant green vegetation and blooming flowers. It can be an excellent time for photographers and nature enthusiasts.
- Wildlife: Wildlife viewing in parks like Akagera National Park can also be rewarding during the rainy season, as animals are more active and there’s more water available for them.
However, there are some downsides to visiting during the rainy season:
- Muddy Roads: The rain can make some roads and trails muddy and difficult to navigate, which can impact travel plans.
- Mosquitoes: Rainy seasons can lead to an increase in mosquitoes, so it’s essential to take precautions against mosquito-borne diseases.
- Unpredictable Weather: While temperatures remain relatively mild, the weather can be unpredictable, and you may experience rainfall during your visit.
Regarding temperatures during the rainy season, as mentioned earlier, daytime temperatures in Rwanda generally range from 15°C (59°F) to 30°C (86°F). These temperatures can vary slightly depending on the specific location and altitude within the country.
If you don’t mind occasional rain and are prepared for potentially muddy conditions, visiting Rwanda during the rainy season can offer a unique and beautiful experience. However, if you prefer more predictable weather and drier conditions for travel, you may want to consider visiting during the dry season, from June to mid-September.
